4 hours for a hike

Nagarkot, which is 32 kilometers east of Kathmandu, can be visited for a day, but it is best to hike around the area and, if possible, stay overnight to fully experience the area's beauty and mountain vistas.

Drive for about an hour to reach Sakhu, a historic Newari settlement on the northeastern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, where your walk will begin. Through pine trees, the hike lasts about four hours. When you get in Nagarkot, you can stroll through the community and take in the breathtaking Himalayan sundown. Take a (pre-arranged) taxi back to Kathmandu from there, or stay overnight and trek down the next day, or take a local bus. Not to mention the even more breathtaking sunrise!

How to Get There (For Individual Trekkers)

From Kathmandu, take a bus to Bhaktapur, and then from the Bhaktapur bus stop, take a bus to Sakhu.

Places to Stay

In Nagarkot itself, lodging options range widely from the affordable to the incredibly comfortable. The less expensive lodging fills up quickly on Friday and Saturday nights, so you might wish to make reservations in advance. Camping is possible, however it is getting harder to find a nice camping spot as more and more hotels are being built.
