Bhaktapur is the third "Royal City", located on the old trade route to Tibet, just outside of Kathmandu. For Bhaktapur, trade routes are both arterial ties and a major source of wealth. At that time, its relative remoteness allowed the city to develop independently and in a different way from the other two cities.
Contrary to Patan and Kathmandu, the population of Bhaktapur is mainly Hindus. The best place to start exploring the city is Durbar Square. In addition to the Royal Palace, there are several temples. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Many buildings in Bhaktapur Durbar Square were damaged in the 2015 earthquake, and the main temples are close to being completely repaired, but progress has not been so rapid in most of the surrounding areas.
